Steel yourself

The Tatas have set up shop near Science City and project fittings and other accoutrements that will blow your mind, writes Mathures PaulFirst came designer-wear stores. Lifestyle, medicine and home-improvement stores followed. Now it’s time for a store exclusively for steel. Located on the Park Circus Connector near Science City, and all of 20,000 square feet, it stocks everything from pliers to water jugs and everything has a little bit of steel.
The Tata Steel project has given birth to the country’s first steel retail store and also marks the company’s foray into steel retailing. Steeljunction has on offer around 4,500 products from different brands. "We are always interested in experimenting. In future perhaps we will have more outlets in the city and definitely across India," says B Muthuraman, Tata Steel managing director. The site for this pilot project was earlier unveiled by Rata Tata, company chairman, on 9 August 2004 and it’s taken four months for the team to complete it.
Under one roof you can pick up kitchenware, gym equipment, bathroom fittings, home protection items like fences, hand tools, furniture, lifestyle items like sunglasses with steel frames and jewellery. The entire range – whether mild steel, alloy steel or stainless steel – is covered in the project range spanning two sections — home construction and maintenance products, and home aesthetics products.
The split level store houses all basic home construction and maintenance products such as construction pipes, bath fittings, galvanised corrugated roofing sheets, and more. The home aesthetics range includes stylised furniture, kitchenware, crockery, cutlery, stainless steel jewellery, lamps, etc. According to a company official, Steeljunction combines innovation with functionality and has been positioned as a one-stop destination for consumers keen on "steel shopping".
For the time being, the store will feature 20 domestic and international brands of steel products. It also has a library/reading room where students and professionals can catch up on books that are not easily available in the market. Since this is a pilot project, Tata is not willing to divulge construction costs. After testing the market, more brands and outlets will be added.Representatives are also not willing to say how long this will remain a pilot programme. One of the strategies of the shop is to influence women into buying steel products at competitive prices. Well spread out, you will find low beds with steel frames that are perfect for kids or contemporary homes, table and chair sets for small families, simple hangers for the everyday wardrobe, book cases, kitchen fittings and lots more.
